Bar Casa Mari is the kind of place you would probably never find or know about unless someone told you. It is a small bar with a marquee covered outdoor area nestled in between horreos in the tiny aldea of Arboleya. This place has survived unchanged for decades. After years of visiting Asturias before making it my home this January, I thought I knew some of the region's hidden gems – but Casa Mari reminded me there are always more discoveries waiting in these mountain valleys.

This classic "chigre-tienda" has been family-run for decades – opened by owner María's grandmother and now carried on by María and her husband José Manuel.

🌟 WHAT MAKES CASA MARI SPECIAL

  • Family-run chigre-tienda operated by María and José Manuel for decades

  • Very simple food, all home made with love

  • Authentic village setting where you dine as locals have for generations

  • Legendary hospitality that makes visitors feel "como en casa"

The Experience

The moment you step inside, Casa Mari feels like visiting someone's beloved grandmother's kitchen. You'll immediately notice the cozy, homey ambiance: warm wood-paneled walls, old photographs, and even a cabinet of china. As one traveler perfectly described it – "como ir a casa de la abuela" (like going to grandmother's house).

The owners are famously welcoming; as one guest put it, the "gusto de Mari y Jose hace único este auténtico lugar de encuentro" (Mari and José's warmth makes this authentic meeting place unique), and at Casa Mari you truly feel "como en casa". In fine weather you can sit outside next to the hórreo just like the locals – a truly picturesque spot.

Food Focus

Casa Mari's kitchen operates on principles I deeply respect: family recipes, farm-to-table ingredients, and absolute authenticity. They even raise their own cattle, so the compango (smoked ham, chorizo, morcilla in stews) is 100% housemade. Don’t expect choices here, there is usually croquettas, cochopo and 1 or 2 others dishes - well made and served very simply.

"Always call ahead – Casa Mari is tiny, so call the day before to book your spot. Ask for 'lo que diga Mari' if you want the day's best offerings. The house specialty is whatever Mari is cooking that day. It is walking distance from Arcenoyu (about 40 minutes) - but be aware there is a big hill in between us - could be perfect for walking off that Cachopo.

Why We Love It

Casa Mari represents everything I hope to share with future guests about authentic Asturias. This is quintessential Asturias: rustic, genuine, and utterly welcoming. Every visitor note praises the "comida casera" and "trato inigualable" (homemade food and unmatched treatment).

Having explored countless village bars during my years visiting Asturias, I recognize Casa Mari's rare authenticity. Whether you're passing through Cabranes on a hike or looking for a rustic lunch spot, Casa Mari delivers on charm, flavor and warmth. As one local perfectly summarized: "Un espectáculo de trato y un 10 en la calidad de la comida" – spectacular treatment and perfect food quality.

From my perspective as someone building connections in this community, it's "un bar muy acogedor" with "todo perfecto" on the plate. For future Asturias Vacations guests coming from the coast or big towns, it's a chance to experience the real inland Asturias – green valleys, cider culture and down-to-earth hospitality.

Getting There & Practical Tips: Casa Mari sits on the local Cabranes road (CB-6). By car, take the turnoff at Arboleya (plenty of on-street parking is available nearby).

They open at 11:00 ish and serve until late, so you can enjoy a leisurely lunch or an early dinner. Weekdays are quieter; weekends can fill up with hikers and cider pilgrims from nearby villages. Keep your camera handy – the row of hórreos across the road is straight out of an Asturian postcard.
